Sean Thomas

Sean 2.jpg

Sean spent most of his life giving back to his community and working to make the world a better place. He believed that one of the best ways to achieve this was to support young people. This dedication to our collective future inspired him to help many people in his life and contribute to a wide range of institutions, from helping establish Big Brothers Big Sisters New Zealand, to running karate clubs, to mentoring countless individuals who have gone on to do the same for others in need of a hand up. It was  through Sean that I became involved with the Nelson Rotary Club of WhakatÅ« and this project is forever indebted to the many Rotarians who have helped it come to fruition. You can read more about Sean’s incredible life here on his website. Sean sadly passed away in 2021 and the world is poorer for his loss, this project goes some way to acknowledging the life he chose to lead and the work he began whilst with us.

In 2006 Sean was introduced to Franco by Rae Perkins who had met Franco while visiting Uganda 5 years prior on a research trip. Sean agreed to ensure Franco got an education and stayed fed and in good health. Fast forward 16 years and Franco is now a leader in his community and paying forward the support and care shown to him by Rae and Sean.

“It is only the virtue of one’s birth that separates the haves from the have nots; the hungry from the fed. Pay forward what good fortune you have been given” Sean Thomas
